Best Catan Expansions Ranked: Which One Should You Buy First?
We break down every major Catan expansion by what it adds, who it's for, and whether it's worth the price.
Catan has more expansions than most games have editions. The question isn't whether to expand â it's which one to grab first.
For most groups: get the 5â6 Player Extension if you need more seats, otherwise go straight for Seafarers.
5â6 Player Extension
Best First BuyAdds components for 5th and 6th players, plus extra hex tiles for a larger island. Introduces the "Special Building Phase" where all players can build between turns.
Seafarers
The Natural EvolutionShips work like roads but over water. Multi-island scenarios give you real exploration. The gold hex produces any resource, adding flexibility without complexity. Most experienced players consider Seafarers + base game to be the "real" Catan.
Cities & Knights
The Strategy ExpansionTransforms Catan from a gateway game into a serious strategy game. Commodities, city improvement tracks, knights defending against barbarian invasions. Many more decisions per turn.
Traders & Barbarians
The Variety PackFive independent mini-scenarios (Fishermen, Rivers, The Great Wall, Barbarian Attack, Traders & Barbarians). Each adds a different twist without overwhelming anyone. Great for families and mixed groups.
Explorers & Pirates
The Adventure ExpansionShips carry settlers and goods, with mission-based goals beyond reaching 10 VP. Doesn't combine with Seafarers or C&K â it's its own experience. Be aware setup time increases a lot.
