A step-by-step guide to fast setup, including a resource organization trick that cuts time in half.
Catan setup is the tax you pay before the fun starts. Sorting resource cards,
shuffling number tokens, arranging hex tiles â it eats 10â15 minutes if you're
not careful.

Quick Answer
The secret to fast setup isn't speed â it's how you stored the game last time. Good teardown = instant setup.

The Biggest Time Sink
The single thing that slows setup down the most is separating five types of
resource cards from whatever jumbled state they were left in.
The 5-Step Speedrun
1
Frame First
30 sec
Lay out the six ocean frame pieces. They only fit one way. If you store them pre-assembled (which they're designed for), this is instant.
2
Tiles â Randomize as You Place
60 sec
Shuffle the 19 terrain hexes face-down and place them into the frame one by one, flipping as you go. Random placement is the default and fastest approach.
3
Number Tokens â The Alphabet Trick
60 sec
The number tokens have small letters (a through r) on their backs. Place them in alphabetical order starting from a corner, spiraling inward. Skip the desert. This guarantees proper number distribution.
4
Cards & Bank
45 sec
If your resources are pre-sorted, just set out the five piles. Shuffle the development card deck. Place longest road and largest army cards to the side.
5
Player Setup
60 sec
Each player takes their color tray (5 settlements, 4 cities, 15 roads) and two building cost reference cards. Initial settlement placement happens during play.
Advanced: The Preset Map
For the absolute fastest setup, use a recommended beginner layout from the
rulebook. These have fixed hex positions and fixed number placements. You can
even photograph your favorite layout and recreate it from the photo in under
2 minutes.
Storage Habits That Pay Off Every Game
đ§Š
Ocean frame pieces stored assembled or rubber-banded together

Number tokens in alphabetical order in a small bag
đĻ
Resources separated by type using dividers or a token system

Each player's pieces in their own bag with a reference card
