How Does the Factory Work in Scythe?
The Factory sits at the center of the Scythe board and is one of the most important strategic elements in the game. Getting there first — and picking the right card — can define your entire game.
How Factory Cards Work
Move your character to the Factory. It's in the center of the board. You need mechs deployed to cross rivers to get there (unless you're Nordic).
Pick one Factory card from those available. There are always one more card than the number of players. First player there gets the best selection.
Add it to your player mat as a 5th action column. You can now use this action on any turn instead of your other 4 actions.
One card per player. You only pick a Factory card the first time your character visits. Returning later doesn't give you another card.

Common Questions
"Can I use my Factory card on the same turn I pick it up?"
No. You moved to the Factory this turn (using your Move action), so you can't take another top-row action. You can use it starting next turn.
"Does my character have to stay at the Factory?"
No. Once you pick up the card, it's yours permanently. Your character can move freely.
"What if I lose a combat at the Factory?"
Your character retreats home, but you keep your Factory card. The card is never lost. However, you lose control of the Factory territory (and its 3-territory bonus).
