Wyrmspan Cave Strategy: How to Build an Efficient Dragon Engine

Maximize your cave layout and chain dragon abilities for big combos.

Wyrmspan's cave system is where the game's strategic depth lives. Unlike Wingspan's three simple habitat rows, your cave is a multi-layered space that you progressively explore and fill with dragons.

đŸŽ¯
Quick Answer

Explore deep early to unlock high-value spots, then fill caves with dragons that chain together. Don't spread too thin across all three cave types.

The Three Cave Types

đŸ”Ĩ

Crimson Cavern

Resource generation. Dragons here produce gold, meat, or crystals when activated. Your economic engine.

💎

Golden Grotto

Card advantage. Draw dragon cards, peek at the deck, or tuck cards for points. Your information engine.

🌙

Amethyst Abyss

Egg-laying and scoring. Dragons here multiply your egg production and end-game points. Your score engine.

Core Strategic Principles

đŸŽ¯

Specialize, Don't Generalize

Having 2 strong caves beats having 3 mediocre ones. Each dragon you play in a cave makes every future activation of that cave stronger (you trigger all dragons in the row). Depth beats breadth.

⛏ī¸

Explore Early, Score Late

The deeper cave slots have stronger bonuses and more space. Spend your early turns exploring to unlock the best positions, then fill them with your highest-value dragons in later rounds.

🔗

Chain Dragon Powers

Look for dragons whose abilities feed into each other. A dragon that generates gold + a dragon that converts gold into points in the same cave = compounding value every time you activate that cave row.

Common Mistakes

❌

Playing expensive dragons too early

Big dragons are tempting but cost resources you need for exploration. Cheap dragons early, expensive dragons late.

❌

Ignoring exploration bonuses

The bonuses you get from exploring are free resources and points. Skipping exploration to play dragons is usually wrong in the first half of the game.

❌

Hoarding resources

Unlike Wingspan where you can sit on food, Wyrmspan rewards spending. Unspent resources at game end are worth very little.
