From Inns & Cathedrals to Traders & Builders — which expansions are worth it?
Carcassonne has over a dozen expansions spanning two decades. Some are
essential, some are niche, and some are skippable. Here's the ranking.
🎯
Quick Answer
Inns & Cathedrals is the must-have first expansion. Traders & Builders is a strong second. Everything else is optional.
#1 ESSENTIAL
🏨
Inns & Cathedrals
Expansion 1
6th PlayerBig MeepleHigh-Risk Tiles
Adds the large meeple (counts as 2 for majority), inn tiles (roads score double if completed, zero if not),
and cathedral tiles (cities score triple if completed, zero if not). The risk/reward mechanic transforms
the game. Also adds a 6th player color.
The builder lets you take double turns when extending a feature — speeds up the game and
makes building feel rewarding. Trade goods add a set-collection element. The pig boosts
farmer scoring. All three mechanics fit seamlessly.
🐑
Hills & Sheep
Expansion 9
Adds a push-your-luck sheep-herding mechanic and hills that resolve tie-breaks.
Light and fun — a good "third expansion" that doesn't add much complexity.
👸
The Princess & The Dragon
Expansion 3
Adds a dragon that eats meeples and a fairy that protects them. Much more aggressive
and chaotic than base Carcassonne. Some love it, some hate it — it fundamentally
changes the feel of the game.
