Organize your bird cards, food tokens, and player mats for lightning-fast setup.
Wingspan has a lot of components — bird cards, food tokens, eggs, player mats,
a dice tower birdfeeder, bonus cards, round goals. Setup can drag if you're not
organized.
🎯
Quick Answer
Pre-sorting bird cards and using separate bags for each component type cuts setup from 10+ minutes to under 5.
The 6-Step Setup Speedrun
1
Player Mats + Action Cubes
30 sec
Each player takes a mat and 8 action cubes. If using Oceania mats (recommended), use the teal side for the standard game.
2
Birdfeeder + Food Dice
15 sec
Place the dice tower in the center. Roll all 5 food dice into it. Done — the birdfeeder is ready.
3
Bird Card Tray
45 sec
Shuffle the bird deck. Place it face-down. Flip 3 cards face-up into the tray. If you store the deck pre-shuffled (do this at teardown), this is 15 seconds.
4
Eggs + Food Tokens
30 sec
Place the egg supply in a central bowl. Set out food tokens by type. Using 3D-printed food tokens instead of the cardboard dice makes this instant — they're pre-sorted by shape.
5
Round Goals + Bonus Cards
45 sec
Place the 4 round goal tiles on the goal board (random or predetermined). Deal 2 bonus cards to each player — they'll keep one.
6
Starting Hand
60 sec
Deal 5 bird cards to each player. Each player also gets 5 food tokens (1 of each type). Players simultaneously choose which birds and food to keep — total birds + food must equal 5.
Storage Tips for Instant Setup
🎲
Keep the 5 food dice in the birdfeeder tower between games — just roll on setup
🥚
Store eggs in a single ziplock — they're all identical, no sorting needed
🃏
Shuffle the bird deck at teardown, not at setup (less annoying when you're eager to play)

Use the original insert or an organizer — Wingspan's box is well-designed for component separation
