How Does the Birdfeeder Work in Wingspan?

The dice tower, rerolling, and when you can take food — the birdfeeder rules explained clearly.

The birdfeeder is Wingspan's most unique component — a dice tower that controls which food is available. Here's exactly how it works and when it resets.

🎯
Quick Answer

Roll 5 food dice into the birdfeeder at game start. When you take the 'gain food' action, choose dice from the feeder. If all remaining dice show the same face, reroll all of them before choosing.

How the Birdfeeder Works

1

Setup: Roll All 5 Dice

At the start of the game, roll all 5 food dice into the birdfeeder (dice tower). The faces showing are the available food.
2

Gain Food Action

When you take the "gain food" action (forest row), you pick one die from the birdfeeder per food you gain. Take the matching food token from the supply.
3

The Reroll Rule

If at any point all remaining dice in the birdfeeder show the same face, you may (but don't have to) reroll all dice before taking food. This prevents one food type from dominating.
4

Empty Feeder

If the birdfeeder is completely empty when you need to take food, reroll all 5 dice back into it.

Common Questions

"When exactly does the reroll trigger?"

Any time you're about to gain food and all remaining dice show the same face. Check before taking your first die. It also triggers between taking dice if a bird power gives you extra food.

"Is the reroll mandatory?"

No. The reroll is optional. If all dice show the food you want, you can skip the reroll and just take from what's there.

"Can I save dice between turns?"

No. The birdfeeder is shared. Dice stay in the feeder until someone takes them or they're rerolled.
