Can You Trade on Your First Turn in Catan? Rules Explained

A common question that trips up new and experienced players alike. Here's what the rulebook actually says.

First real turn of the game. You've placed settlements, collected starting resources, and you see a trade that would let you build a road. But can you actually trade yet?

🎯
Quick Answer

Yes — you can trade on your first turn. But NOT during the initial settlement placement phase (before the first dice roll).

The Two Phases People Confuse

🚫

Setup Phase

Each player places 2 settlements and 2 roads. After the second settlement, collect one resource per adjacent hex.

No trading allowed

First Turn

First player rolls dice and takes a normal turn. From here, all normal rules apply.

All trading available

What Counts as a Valid Trade?

🤝

Domestic Trade

Offer any resources to another player in exchange for theirs. Both must agree. No limit per turn.

🏦

Maritime Trade (Bank)

Trade 4 of the same resource to the bank for 1 of anything. No player agreement needed.

Port Trade

3:1 general port or 2:1 specialty port — if you have a settlement there, you can use it immediately.

Can You Trade AND Build in the Same Turn?

Yes. The typical turn: roll dice → collect resources → trade to get what you need → build. You can trade and build in any order, and do multiple of each per turn.
