The complete guide to Longest Road — how to earn it, lose it, and the edge cases that cause arguments.
The Longest Road card is worth 2 victory points and causes more arguments
than any other rule in Catan. When does it switch? Can settlements break a
road? What happens in a tie?
🎯
Quick Answer
You need at least 5 consecutive road segments to claim Longest Road. If someone builds a longer continuous road, they take it. If yours gets broken by an opponent's settlement, recalculate.
The Basic Rules
✅
Minimum 5 segments
You need at least 5 consecutive road pieces to claim the Longest Road card.
✅
Must be continuous
The road must be an unbroken chain. Branches count — you use the longest single path through your road network.
✅
Your settlements don't break it
Your own settlements and cities along the road do NOT break your chain — the road continues through them.
When Does Longest Road Switch?
Scenario 1: Someone Builds a Longer Road
If another player builds a continuous road that's longer than yours, they
immediately take the Longest Road card. They must exceed your
length — tying is not enough.
Scenario 2: Your Road Gets Broken
An opponent builds a settlement at an intersection along your road, breaking
your chain. Recalculate the longest continuous segment of your remaining road.
If it's no longer the longest, the card moves — or goes back to the supply if
no one has 5+.
Scenario 3: Tie After a Break
If your road gets broken and the remaining segment ties with another player who
already had a long road, nobody gets the card. It returns to the
supply until someone has a clear longest road of 5+.
Edge Cases That Cause Arguments
❓
"Can an opponent's settlement break my road?"
Yes. If another player builds a settlement at an intersection along your road, it splits your road into two separate chains.
❓
"Does a loop/circle count?"
Yes, loops are valid road segments. Count the longest path through the loop (don't double-count any segment).
❓
"Do ships count in Seafarers?"
Yes. Ships and roads both count as segments for Longest Road (called "Longest Trade Route" in Seafarers).
