How Many Victory Points Do You Need to Win Catan?

The winning condition, how to count points, and hidden VP cards explained.

The answer is simple — but knowing how to count them and when to reveal hidden points is where it gets interesting.

Quick Answer

You need 10 victory points to win Catan. Points come from settlements (1), cities (2), Longest Road (2), Largest Army (2), and Victory Point development cards (1 each). You must reach 10 on YOUR turn.

The Hidden VP Card Rule

🃏

Victory Point development cards stay face down until you reach 10 points total. You reveal them only when declaring victory. This means opponents can't see how close you are if you're holding VP cards — making them one of the most powerful cards in the game.

Common Questions

"Can I win on another player's turn?"

No. You can only win during your own turn. Even if you reach 10 points because someone lost Longest Road to you on their turn, you must wait until your turn to declare victory.

"Can I go over 10 points?"

Yes. If you reveal 2 hidden VP cards to jump from 8 to 12, that's a valid win. You just need at least 10.

"What if two players reach 10 at the same time?"

Can't happen. Only the active player (whose turn it is) can win. If multiple players technically have 10+ points, the one whose turn it is wins.
